President John Tyler signs a paper to annex Texas -
US Tried to Buy Land (Slidell and Polk)
President Polk sent John Slidell to Mexico to try to buy Texas from Mexico. The Mexican press hears of the meeting and calsl the Mexican leader, President Herrera, a traitor. Fearing of b eing disrespected Herrera refuses to meet Slidell. -
US Troops Stationed at Disputed Border
General Taylor's army moves into disputed land. -
US Declares War
President Polk recieves General Taylor's letters and asks the United States Congress to declare war on Mexico. Congress apporoves. President Polk wanted to the declare war on Mexico to intimidate them into resloving the Texas problem and for Mexico to sell them California and New Mexico. -
US Victories (The Battle of Palo Alto)
The Battle of Palo Alto was the first major battle in the Mexican American War. The American army led by General Taylor fought the Mexican army led by General Mariano Arista. The U.S. army bravely fought and became victorious after three hours of fighting. -
Mexico City Surrendered
U.S. army invades Mexico City -
Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo
Negotiators from the American and Mexican side signed the Treay of Guadelupe Hidalgo. The treaty gave the U.S. 55 percent of Mexican land, while Mexico got fifteen million dollars in damages.
