Dewey Criticizes Reflex Arc Framework
In response to the reflex arc framework, Dewey, while working as a professor at Chicago University wrote a critique in 1896. He argued that in trying to justify actions as just a reflex to a stimulus we instead realized that this stimulus was a mixture of tons of other little things we experience. Dewey said that "it is evident that terms such as stimulus, response, sensation, and movement “mean distinctions of flexible function only, not of fixed existence” (Hildebrand 2018). -
