Articles of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation created a loose alliance of the 13 independent states. The articles was also the first attempt of a constitution. -
Money Problems
As continental dollars became nearly worthless, states printed their own currency. This caused confusion. -
Land Ordinance of 1785
Set up a system for settling the Northwest Ordinance. Each township would then be further divided into 36 sections of 1 square mile each. Congress planned to sell sections to settle4rs for $640 apiece. -
Northwest Ordinance
This set up a government for the Northwest Territory. It also provided for the vast region to be divided into seperate territories in the future. -
Great Compromise
Each side gave up some demands to achieve unity. They combined the New Jersey and the Virginina plan. -
New Jersey Plan
It also called for three branches. But each state, regardless of population, would have one vote in legislature. -
Virginia Plan
It called for a strong national government with three branches. The legislative branch would pass the laws. The excutive branch would carry out the laws. The judicial branch would decide if laws were carried out fairly. -
Three-fifths Compromise
Representatives agreed that three fifths of the slaves in any state would be counted If a state had 5,000 slaves, 3,000 of them would be includede in hte state's population count. -
Shay's Rebbelion
Farmers attacked courthouses and prevented the state from seizing farms. The Massachusetts legislature sent the militia to drive them off. -
Constitutional Convetion
Its goal was to revise the Articles of Confederation. Every state except Rhode Island sent representatives.
