The Birth of Jazz
Jazz was born in New Orleans in the late 19th century, while the rest of the United States were still listening to classic music, In new Orleans they were dancing to Voodoo rhythms. but its roots can be found in the musical traditions of both Africa and Europe. In fact, some people say that jazz is a union of African and European music. From African music, jazz got its: rhythm and "feel" there is no exact date to when jazz was first played in the States but most would say from 1890 and 1900 -

The First's
the first Official Jazz band came out of New Orleans in 1917 was named the Original Dixieland Jass Band (ODJB), they were started when a Producer from Chicago thought it would be a great idea to bring a New Orleans style band back to the Windy City. the band consisted of five members, clarinetist Alcide Nunez,drummer Johnny Stein, trombonist Eddie Edwards, pianist Henry Ragas, and cornetist Frank Christian. -

Cool Jazz
Cool Jazz evolved directly from Bop in the late 1940's and 1950's. A smoothed out mixture of Bop and Swing, tones were again harmonic and dynamics were now softened. The ensemble arrangement had regained importance.Nicknamed "West Coast Jazz" because of the many innovations coming from Los Angeles, Cool became nation wide by the end of the 1950's, with significant contributions from East Coast musicians and composers. -
