The Native American tribe "Powhatan" captured John Smith. There was a lot of fighting because the Colonists would steel the Powhatan's crops. Pocahontas kept John Smith from being killed.

More than 1/2 the colonists died the first year. The land was not good for farming. No one bothered to gather food. John Smith made a rule tht if you don't work, you don't eat.

John Smith left Jamestown to explore the Atlantic coast. Pocahontas' husband John Rolfe was a leader too and brought tobaco plans for the Colonist to grow and sell.

The first Africans were brought to Jamestown. They became enslaved people. Their hard work helped Virginia. They were hardly ever freed.

Because of the Powhatan and Colonist fighting, King James I made Virginia a Royal Colony. The King now owned the colony and picked a governor who shared the power.
