    Jamaican Colinization

    Jamaican Colinization
    Columbus, the original finder of the US, found the area which is the present day Caribbean. 2 years later the Spanish came and came to take their share. The original people that lived their were called the Tainos. Later, the Spanish basiclly enslaved the people of Jamaica, but over 90% of the people died because of disease.
  • European Invasion

    European Invasion
    In 1655 the European's decided to take the territory, which is now Jamaica. The Spanish and European's fought for a couple of days, eventually the Spanish were eliminated from the present island of Jamaica. The enslaveed Jamaican's took this into play a role by making a political turmoil. The European's made the Port Royal to protect the island of Jamaica.
  • Jamaican Sugar Boom

    Jamaican Sugar Boom
    Sugar cane, brought by the European's, grown by the Jamaicans. They brought this crop, because they couldn't grow it in their conditions, and they also wanted to trade with their tobacco and cotton. Once sugar came to the Jamaican people, the whole British West Indies adapted the sugar cane. In the 18th century traded piracy for sugar cane. When slavery came into play they had to work on plants such as sugar plants. After the slavery was gone, they still worked on them.
  • Baptist War

    Samuel Sharpe led the revlolt which is now called the Baptist War. It became the largest slave uprising in history of Jamaica. The revolt climbed eventually they started to fight each other. They declared full emancipation, which they got in 1838. After they were emancipated they still had hardships and were trying to get a plan for their coutnry.
  • The Morant Bay Rebellion

    The Morant Bay Rebellion
    Tensions built up from the man named Paul Bogle. It sparked in October 7th, because a black man was put on trial and was put into prison from trespassing on a plantation. After the trial the cops and the spectators got into a fight, and in other places they had 2 cops beat up with stones and sticks. Governor John Eyre sent in military troops to stop the rioting. GWG, a politician was running against him for governor, which he was later arrested. GWG was later hanged in a trial.
  • Kingstons, The New Capital

    Kingstons, The New Capital
    In 1872, the government chagned the Spanish Town into Kingston, the present capital of Jamaica. Kingston used to be a place where all of the survivors from Port Royal went to. They tried other cities, but their location weren't the most convinent for the people and the government officials.
  • Marcus Garvey

    Marcus Garvey
    Marcus Garvey was a black activist and a Trade Unionist, also proud founder of the UNIAACL. Now the UNIAACL is one of their political parties. In 1923 he was convicted from mail fraud, and served 5 years in America. Later they finally pardoned him. In Jamaica he is a hero for making it fair for them to have rights, and also making a step closer to being an independent coutnry.
  • The Great Depression

    The Great Depression
    In 1929, when the Great Depression happened the price of sugar went down dramatically. Many Jamaican's moved back to Jamaica, because the jobs in the US were dropping dramatically. Since the disturbances of the Great Depression started to spread across the world. Jamaica even got the affect of the Great Depression. The British applied the Moyone Commision, which provided money to the British West Indies, 1 million pounds to be exact.
  • The Road to Independence

    The Road to Independence
    After World War II Jamaica tried to get its full independence to be a seperate country. Jamaica liked the way of the British more than the American, but wanted to be seperate from Britian. The Jamaican government was trying ever since the 1900's to get freedom, and they finally did in August 6 1962. The people of Jamaica finally got a break from their broken past.
  • The creation of Reggae

    The creation of Reggae
    Reggae, the most known and most popular music in Jamaica. Originally, Reggae came from rock, then changed by some artist to make it an original genre. Jackie Mitto was on of the original artist to start using this type of music. The mokst known reggae artist was Bob Marley.
