Ivan invaded Livonia and started a long and expensive war that he eventually lost.

Ivan's wife, Anastasia Romanova, died. After her he married many times, but never staying with them for long periods of time. Sometimes Ivan would send his "wife" to the convent immediately after marriage.

After the death of his queen, Ivan's mental state quickly deteriorated. He fled Moscow only to come when a group of Boyars begged him to be their king. Ivan declared he would stay only if he was granted absolute power.

Ivan had created the Oprichnina. It was a state policy that allowed him to create a secret police that went around executing those who were thought to be againt the tzar.
