Ivan Robert Marko Milat was born in Guildford, Australia. He was born into a large family who immigrated from Yugoslav. He is pictured here (centre) with his siblings at an estimated age of 10. -
Put on Trial
Ivan was put on trial for the rape of two female hichhikers. The prosecution didn't make the strongest case against him and he was aquitted on the rape charges. -
Backpackers Lucky Escape
Paul Onions, a British Backpacker, was hichhicking from Sydney, trying to find work. He was picked up by Ivan Milat, and after Ivan asked many questions, Paul began to feel very concerned. Milat then pulled onto the side of the road and when Paul tried to get out of the car Milat pulled a gun on him. Paul fled the scene, regardless of the threats Milat made to him and escaped without his belongings. -
Bodies Discovered
Caroline Clarke (Missing since May 1992) and Joanne Walters (Missing since May 1992) were both found in the area of the Belangalo State Forest by people who were on their weekly run. The location that they were found was not far from the area that the attack on Paul Onions occured. Both were stabbed and sexually assaulted. Caroline had also been shot several times in the head. With the killer unidentified, no more bodies were found. -
Bodies Discovered
Two more bodies were found and were those of Deborah Everist (Missing since 1989) and James Gibson (Missing since 1989). Crime scene details were very similar and fatal wounds the same. After this a massive investigation initiated the manual search of the extended Belangalo Forest. -

Final Bodies Discovered
The final two victims, a couple, were found. Gabor Neugebauer (Missing since Christmas 1991) and Anja Habschied (Missing since Christmas 1991). The same crime scene details, only this time Anja Habschied had been decapitated. -
Ivan Milat Arrested
A raid was carried out in the early hours of the morning which led police to a mass amount of evidence which linked Ivan to the murders including many personal belongings of the victims. He was taken into custody and charged with all of the murders. -
Ivan Milat's Trial
After the trial was delayed by just under a year, he pleaded not guilty on all of his charges. -
Ivan Milat Convicted
After a 15-week trial, Milat was found guilty on all charges. He was sentenced to six years imprisonment for the attack on Paul Onions and seven consecutive life sentences for each of the murders. Ivan resides in the maximum-security wing of Goulburn Prison, near Sydney.
