the cotton gin was created in 1793 by eli whitney. this is a very importnant invention because it increased the need for slavery. the cotton gin was designed to remove the seeds from the cotton and since the slaves no longer had to do it by hand it didnt take as long so slave owners need more slaves to keep up with the new machine. goal 1, the new nation. -

John adams our second president, faced french diplomats identified as x y and z. they stated that if our goverment paid money to France american ships would be harrassed by french ships and crews. due to this americans start to distrust forigners and an unoffical war called quasi breaks out between the us and french ships in the caribbean.goal 1, the new nation. -

the alien act increased the time to become a us citizen from 5 years to 14 years. this happened due to the xyz affair and the americans growing distrust of forginers. the seition act basically says that you cant bad mouth the government. goal 1, the new nation. -

1800's-present day. sectionalism is a persons nationalism for their townn or region. in this case or this goal(2) sectionalism is in the north and the south. both the north and south were and in ways still are pushing their ways of life onto each other. goal 2, expansion and reform. -

a war from 1812-1815. causes of the war included impressment of us ships and soldiers, frontier pressure(americans wanted to expand but had great britan, american indians, and spain in their way) and the warhawks which included, john c calhon and henry clay. during this war great britian burns dc and president madison's wife, dolly madsion saves all of the artifacts out of the white house.goal 1, the new nation. -
monroe doctrine
monroe and adams eager to protect the independence of unclaimed american colonies. usa would not tolerate intervention with any of the independent nations in america, america was no longer open to colonizaton from europe, and the us wouldnt interfere with the international affairs of other countries. goal 2, expansion and reform. -
trail of tears
the cherokee indians were promised land by the us goverment but white settlers wanted the land also so preisdent jackson decided to tax the indians on their land in order to get them to leave no matter what the court decided (worchester v georgia). president jackson refused to inforce the law which led to the forced removal of the indians known as the trail of tears, their journey to modern day oklahoma. goal 2, expansion and reform. -
westward migration
in the 1850's-1890's many people moved westward for many difrent reasons. mormons moved westward to escape people in the west critizing them for their religion, when they moved west they were free to believe in what ever they wanted. homesteaders moved west to claim the land that the homestead act was offering for farming. workers moved west or the jobs n the railroads. goal 4, american frontier. -
dread scott v sanford
dread scott was a slave and his owner had taken him to live in both wisconsin and illinois which were free states. so dread scott believed that since he had spent so long on free soil that he should be a free man. so he sued his slave owner but the case was ruled against him because he was the property of his owner and by the 5th amendment he could not be taken away. goal 3, the american war and reconstruction. -
agurments about slavery
the north and the south were still pushing their ways on eachother and they both had completely diffrent views on slavery the north thought that it was completely wrong and they were known as abolitionist, the south on the other hand thought that it was a "necessary evil" due to the fact that the southern economy was based on farming and thats what the slaves were used for. goal 3, the american civil war and reconstruction. these arguments continued up to the 1860's. -
state's rights
the constitional debate over states rights and federal govermants was a cause of the civil war. southerners believed that the states should be able to chose since they depended on diffrent things to make a living when the north believed in a strong central government. states rights would make it so states each had their own government and followed their own rules. goal 3, the american civil war and reconstruction. this debate lasted up threw the civil war. -
farmers alliance
farmers alliance was groups of farmers coming together to get things changed. in farmer alliances the farmers sell and ship their crops together. the government gave rebates to farmers which paid the crops which they didnt sell. goal 4, the american frontier. -

indusrty exploded in the 1880's, with 5 men, vanderbilt, rockefeller, carnegie morgan, and ford. these men established railroads, oil, steel, banking, and affordable cars. these industys started urbanization steel started the building of sky scrappers, and ford made it so every one could have a car. goal 5, the gilded age. -

the progressive party were a extremely diverse group of people from church leaders to even presidents. their main goals were to limit big bussiness, improve democracy for the people, strengthen social justice, and to improve working conditions. goal 7, progressivism. 1890-1914 -

the populism party is also known as the peoples party made up of farmers and small bussiness. the faremers and small bussiness joined together to fight the big bussiness. their key issue in the election of 1896 is bimetalism( backing up the dollar with silver and gold) so they put their support behind the democatic canadate bryan who loses causeing the end of the peoples party. goal 4, the american frontier. -

spanished rulers threatned th ecubans but they wanted independence. the war only lasted 115 days. we ended up going to war when spain's general weyler put many cubans in consentration camps to cut off their food and supplies. out of the war we got cuba, puerto rico, and the phillpines. goal 6, age of imperalism. -

most people who lived in tenements were poor imigrants. the living conditions were extremely poor, many famlies shared one room, and the entire floor shared a bathroom, waste was dumped into the streets causing hourable smells and pollution. goal 7, progressivism. early 1900's -

two italain immigrants sacco and vanezetti were charged with murdering two people in a shoe factory. investigation wasnt like it is today there was no evidence but they were convicted and excuted. goal 8, the great war. -

in the 1920's before the great depression everyone was oh so happy but they were all spending money they didnt have which led us into debt, plus the starck market crash on october 29, 1929.all of the debt people were in led to poverty nation wide and since so many people were in poverty is why the great derprssion was such a big deal in the 1930's. goal 9, rorain 20's. -
