  • Cotton Gin

    Cotton Gin
The Cotton Gin was patented by Eli Whitney. The Cotton Gin was a machine that separated the cotton lint from the cotton seeds. With this machine, one person could clean 50 pounds of cotton a day. The Cotton Gin increased the production of cotton, and increased the need for slave labor.
  • The Steamboat

    The Steamboat
Robert Fulton created the first successful Steamboat, which was called The Clermont. The great thing about the Steamboat is that they didn't have to rely on the wind, and they could travel fast against water currents. Steamboats increased the speed that a person could travel.
  • Arc Lamp

    Arc Lamp
Humphry Davy was the first person to invent an electric light, which is better known as the Arc Lamp. The Arc Lamp was made by connecting two wires to a battery, and using charcoal strips. The Arc Lamp became very popular among the people who lived during this time, and it started being used for street and factory lighting. It was also used in early film production.
  • Steam Locomotive

    Steam Locomotive
George Stephenson designed the first successful Steam Locomotive. The Steam locomotive is the combination of a locomotive, a train, and a steam engine. The Steam Locomotive was one of the first rail lines to ever be invented. The Steam Locomotive is important because it provided faster transportation for people and goods.
  • The Soda Fountain

    The Soda Fountain
Samuel Fahnestock patented the soda fountain in 1819. The first soda fountain was shaped like a barrel, with a pump that dispensed carbonated water. This machine was meant to be hidden, or kept under a counter. This invention became really popular, and by the 1900s, soda fountains could be found anywhere.
  • Toy Balloons

    Toy Balloons
Michael Faraday was the first to invent toy balloons. He invented balloons because he wanted them to be used in his upcoming hydrogen experiments. Even though Michael Faraday only wanted these balloons to be used for his experiment, they became popular among many people, and are still used to this day.
  • The Microphone

    The Microphone
Charles Wheatstone invented the microphone in 1827. He made this device so that it could amplify weak sounds. When he first invented the microphone, it was not very popular, but over the years the microphone has developed and now tons of people use this device daily.
  • Modern Day Match

    Modern Day Match
In 1827, John Walker created the modern day match. He created the friction match by coating the tip with potassium chloride-antimony sulfide paste , and it ignited when he scraped them between sandpaper. It is important that John Walker made this invention because without a match, it would be difficult to light up the things that needed to be lit.
  • Mechanical Reaper

    Mechanical Reaper
The Mechanical Reaper was patented by many people, but the most recognized person is Cyrus McCormick. The Mechanical Reaper allowed farmers to clear their land and harvest their grains quicker. The Mechanical Reaper greatly increased farmer's productivity.
  • The Stapler

    The Stapler
It was in 1841 when Samuel Slocum created and patented the stapler. The first stapler was powerful enough to staple multiple sheets of paper together. When Samuel first created this machine, he called it "The Machine For Sticking Pins in Paper". It is important that Samuel Slocum developed this machine because the stapler is used in offices and homes all around the world.
