  • 1970 Introduction of the Boeing 747 ‘jumbo jet’

    The Boeing 747 is an aircraft frequently known as the "Jumbo Jet" and it is 2 and a half times the size of the Boeing 707, the 747 held the passenger capacity record for 37 years. They then announced that in 2005 that they were bringing out the 747-8 the fourth generation of the 747 This would of effected the travel industry because the more passengers they can carry the more profit they are making.
  • 1974 The then number one UK tour operator Clarkson went into liquidation

    Clarkson's was the number one tour operator in 1974 it had originally run into financial difficulties in 1972, this is when it was taken over by its major supplier of air travel Court line, this collapsed after 2 years along with Clarkson's they then owed 7 million to 100,000 holiday makers. this would of effected the travel industry massively because it was the best tour operator around and lots of other operators wasted money investing in on it and it collapsed so they lost their money
  • 1976 Concorde came into service

    Concorde was the first supersonic passenger carrying commercial airplane, it was a joint effort in building it with manufacturers from Great Britain and France. It made its first transatlantic passenger journey on January 21st 1976. The Concorde was flying to destinations globally but then was costing too much financially so they went to New York as their regular destination. it was then ceased by air France in 2003 this had a good impact as there was more holidays for people to choose from.
  • 1982 British people made 20million visits abroad

    In the 1980s travelling was generally more expensive than it is now, this was because of inflation and the rise of budget airlines which has made travelling more accessible in recent years, but people still loved to explore and in 1982 Brits made 20 million visits abroad the most popular destinations they went to were Spain, France and Italy
  • 1985 Launch of Ryanair

    Ryanair was founded on the 28th of November 1984, their first flight took off in July 1995 from Waterford to London Gatwick which made it the 4th international airport in the country. Ryanair is an ultra low cost airline, they suffered many loses in the early years of business but then in 1990 invested 20 million to restructure, now in July of 2023 they transported over 18.7 million passengers and it is the most popular low cost airline.
  • 1989 Tim Berners-Lee invented the internet

    In 1989 Tim Berners-Lee a British scientist invented the World Wide Web while working at CERN. The World Wide Web was initially invented for scientists to share there data and information but then went on to creating websites for almost anything, this had an impact for the Travel industry because you could then book holidays online quicker and easier than going into a travel agents.
  • 1991 The Intasun holiday company ceased trading

    In 1979 Intasun set up a charter airline, air Europe and announced bargain holidays to the US using planes chartered from Laker airways, Intasun was owned by ILG. In 1991 Intasun collapsed due to financial issues, this led to a significant shake up in the travel industry, many holiday makers were stranded abroad and it also caused a surge in insurance premiums for travel companies.
  • 1994 The Channel Tunnel Opened

    The channel Tunnel is the longest undersea tunnel in the world it has been named one of the Severn wonders of the world, it took 13,000 workers from England and France to build. It transports 4.5 million people a year and then 1.6 million trucks transporting goods. This had a good impact on the travel industry because it cut the travel time from Europe to the Mainland dramatically and more people used it because it was quicker than plane or car.
  • 1995 EasyJet was launched

    In March of 1995 EasyJet was launched and is based in London Luton Airport. Upon Launch it employed just 70 people but now in 2023 they have employed over 16,000 people. EasyJet is a low cost airline throughout Europe, This has effected the Travel industry because they now sell thousands of flights a day and as it is more affordable more people are going on holiday
  • 2001 The 9/11 Attacks

    On September 11th 2001 at 9am two planes struck the Twin Towers of the world trade centre both 110 story buildings set on fire and collapsed causing large clouds of dust, it killed around 3000 people. This attack made a huge impact on the travel industry because they made major changes to travelling they now have more security scanners, metal detectors and bag searches. This also led to the industry having reduced number of travellers because they was worried about flying
  • 2004 Indiana Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami

    In 2004 Indiana Ocean was destroyed by and earthquake and a tsunami which affected 14 countries that had a high number of tourist visitors. As the tsunami and earthquake was so strong it destroyed many areas which later led to a decrease in the number of visitors. It has been said that around 230,000 people lost their lives in this tragic event, this then effected the travel industry because people were frightened to travel to Indiana.
  • 2008 Global Recession

    The global trade between 2008 and 2009 declined by 15% leading to almost going bust, but then in in the years from 2007 all the way up to 2010 the scale of unemployment went up by 3%, the aftermath of this was 30 million jobs were destroyed. It was then said that travel agencies, and airlines were at risk of losing their jobs.
  • 2010 the introduction of photo-sharing social network Instagram

    In 2010 Instagram was founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, it is used to upload photos and videos of yourself and your life a little bit like Facebook. Many people were uploading photos and videos of them on holiday and it became a massive part of how people then went on to choose their holiday destinations for the future, this was because they could really see what it was like.
  • 2010 Icelandic Ash Cloud

    In 2010 Iceland had a volcano erupt which cause many ash clouds causing the country to be harmed with ash. Although it was only a small eruption the outcome of it was huge it effected the Europe air travel, meaning no planes that would need to go over Iceland could go ahead because it would not be safe, this went on for about 3 months nobody could fly there and it was difficult to even see the sky.
  • 2011 Game of Thrones

    Game of Thrones was a programme many people have watched and loved it started in April of 2011, it was filmed in many locations such as Spain, Morocco, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Dark Hedges, Ballintoy, Castle Ward and Northern Ireland. As many people have watched this show these locations have become much more popular as people loved seeing them and wanted to experience them for themselves.
  • 2020 Covid 19

    Covid 19 was a virus that started its rounds in China in 2019 and soon become a world wide virus, this then caused a pandemic and led to a lockdown meaning the whole world was at a stop. Covid 19 caused chaos it stopped people from working, travelling, socializing and peoples mental health due to having to isolate. This had a huge impact of the Travel industry as their was rules put in place you could only travel if you'd been jabbed and had a test which led to a decrease in the industry
