(JULY-AUGUST 1990) Hitchhikes to California's Lake Tahoe Then hikes into the Sierra Nevada mountain range Chris then travels to the Cascade mountains, across the lava beds of the Columbia River basin, and across the Idaho panhandle. Jan Burres and her boyfriend Bob discover McCandless by the side of the road and friend him. In Cut Bank, Montana, Chris meets Wayne Westberg. -

In Needles, California, Chris reaches the Colorado River. he then walks south through the desert, he then eventually arrivies in Topock, Arizona, where he buys a second-hand canoe. -

(OCT.31-NOVEMBER) Chris then canoes on the Colorado River, apparently traveling through Lake Havasu, the Bill Williams River, the Colorado River Indian Reservation, the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge, the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge, and the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Ground. He then sends a postcard to Wayne Westberg at the Sioux Falls workrelease facility where his friend has been kept -

Chris then reaches the Morelos Dam and the Mexican-U.S. border. -

Chris then encounters very dangerous waterfalls along the Colorado River. -

Chris then realizes that he will not reach the Gulf of California traveling this route. A little while later, he meets with some duck hunters who drive him there. -

(DEC.14-24) Chris pulls his canoe out of the water and sets up camp on the edge of a desolate plateau. -

Chris then seeks refuge from high winds, then discovers a cave on on a bluff, where he stays for 10 days. -

Back in his canoe, Chris encounters a violent storm that almost drowns him. :'( -

He Then left his canoe at El Golfo de Santa Clara, Chris then starts to wander northward. -

Chris was then caught by U.S. Immigration officials when he tries to slip back into the country from Mexico. Chris then spends one night in jail. -

(JANUARY-FEBUARY 2) Chris then travels to Houston and then to the Pacific coast -

Chris then applies for an ID and a job in Los Angeles, then for some reason, changes his mind and returns to the road. -

Chris then camps out at the bottom of the Grand Canyon with a young German couple. he notes in his journal that he has lost over 25 pounds during his whole journey. -

He then undigs the few belongings that he buried in the sand when he abandoned his datsun. -

Chris then buries his backpack and hitchhikes into Las Vegas. -

(JULY-AUGUST 1991) Chris who is possibly living in coastal Oregon, sends a postcard to Jan Burres complaining about the interminable fog and rain thier. -

(OCTOBER 1991) After some time, Chris then arrives in Bullhead City, Arizona, where he works for two months at McDonalds and lives in an empty RV overseen by an old man named Charlie. -

Chris then sends another postcard to Jan Burres in Niland, California, which includes a map so she and her boyfriend Bob can visit him sometime in Bullhead City. -

Chris then unexpectedly appears at Burres's campsite at The Slabs campground in Niland -

Chris the n meets Ronald Franz while hitchhiking near California's Salton Sea. -

Chris, after hitchkicking was dropped off by Franz at the San Diego waterfront. Again he mails Jan Burres a postcard telling her that he has been living on the streets in San Diego for about a week. -

Chris, now in Seattle sends postcards to Burres and Franz. -

Chris calls Franz from Coachella, California, in the desert not far from the Salton Sea and asks Franz to pick him up. -

Franz gets his phone call and picks Chris up. then Chris spends one night at Franz's house -

The next day, Chris is then driven by Franz to Grand Junction, Colorado. -

(MARCH 14-28) He then works at Wayne Westberg's grain elevator in Carthage, South Dakota. -

he then leaves Carthage, then is bound for Alaska. -
Chris
(APRIL 13-15) Chris then stops at Liard Hot Springs in British Columbia, Canada, where he is stuck for two days before hitching a ride with Gaylord Stuckey in the cab of his sunflowerseed hauling truck. -

Chris hitchhikes north, then he takes a photo of the sign that marks the official start of the Alaska Highway. -

(APRIL 18-21) Chris stuides up on edible plants at the University of Alaska's Fairbanks campus. he then buys a used gun and sends postcards. then leaves the campus and then hikes west. -

puts up his tent on frozen ground not far from the Stampede Trail. -
Chris
While walking down the highway, he gets picked up by Jim Gallien, a truckdriving electrician on his way to Anchorage. A 3 hour drive brings Chris to the Stampede Trail. -

Chris Sees Mt.McKinley -

Chris then finds a old bus beside the Sushana River and writes magic bus day in his journal. he then decides to stay for a while, taking advantage of the bus's crude comforts. -

Chris then kills and eats a spruce grouse. -
Chris
Chris then shoots a small squirrel and writes 4th day famine in his journal. -
Chris
With only four hours of darkness each night, Chris can look for edible plants. he eats on lingonberries and rose hips. -
Chris
one of Chris's crowns falls off one of his molars. -
CHRIS
(MAY 23- JUNE 9) His main diet regularly consitsts of esquirrel, spruce grouse, duck, goose, and porcupine -

Chris then kills a big moose and takes a photo of himself with the carcass. -
Chris
Chris then discovers maggots on the carcass, he then abandons it to the local wolves -
Chris
Chris prepares his backpack and sets out on the 20 mile hike back to the road. -
Chris
What had been a series of frozen beaver ponds in April has become a lake. What once was an easily fordable river is now a raging torrent that Chris cannot cross. he then heads back to the bus. -

Chris then arrives back at the bus -

Writes in his journal, "Extremly weak, fault of pot. seed much trouble just to stand up. starving in great jeopardy!!" -

Writes in his journel, "Day 100! made it!" and "But in weakest condition of life. death looms as a serious threat." -
Chris
Chris then sees a bear but doesn't shoot it, but he kills five squirrels. -
Chris
Chris kills and eats a ptarmigan. -
Chris
Chris posts an S.O.S. note on the bus door, he then looks nearby for berries. and again writes his final journal entry: "Beautiful blueberries." -

Chris then dies, apparently of starvation, in his sleeping bag in the bus along the Sushana River in Alaska. -

Hikers and hunters discover Chris's S.O.S. note on the bus, then his body inside the bus.
