    Intervention of the Cotton Gin
    In 1794 Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. Eli Whitney's Invention made cotton profitable. It also caused many farmers to give up on their crops and start to grow cotton. The Cotton Gin increased the speed of the process to remove the seeds from the cotton fiber.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    In 1820, the purpose of the Missouri Compromise was to maintain a balance between the free states and the slave states. The Missouri Compromise also passed an amendment that drew an imaginary line the former Louisiana Territory.
  • Nat Turners Rebellion

    In August 1831 slaves went on strike. Nat Turner was influenced by the eclipse of the sun that it was time to rise up. Nat Turner also enlisted about 75 other people along with him.

    California became part of the union as the 16th slave state. Slavery was maintained in the nations capital. Slave trade was prohibited. Texas lost Boundary dispute with New Mexico.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin is Published
    An anti-slave novel was Published in 1852. This book established stowe's reputation as a woman for letters. The lady that wrote this book (Stowe) continued to write throughout her life and died in 1896.
  • Underground Railroad

    Underground Railroad
    During the underground railroad many African Americans offered shelter and aid to the escaped slaves. The slaves that ran away generally traveled 10 to 20 miles away . George Washington was complaining about his run away slaves getting help from a society of quackers formed for such purpose.

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passes on May 30, 1854. Served to repeal the Missouri compromise of 1820. It was the single most important event leading to the civil war.

    Ruled that a slave who had resided in a free state was not thereby entitled to his freedom. African Americans could never be citizens of the United States. The court made a decision that slave owners take their slaves to the western territories.

    Was also known as the Border war. Two territories were formed, Kansas ans Nebraska. It was called Bleeding Kansas to describe the violent hostile between Pro and antislavery forces in the Kansas territory.
