INFANCY AND CHILDHOOD: A TIMELINE

    REFLEX ABILITY:
    Baby has come into the world. He now has the ability to see, hear, smell, and respond to his new environment .
  • ONE WEEK OLD

    REFLEX ABILITY (ROOTING):
    While breast feeding, the baby's mother touches her nipple to the baby's cheek, which helps guide his mouth toward the nipple.
  • 1 1/2 MONTHS

    REFLEX ABILITIES (GRASPING):
    The baby's father places a stuffed bear near his hand. The baby grasps the leg of the bear.
  • 2 MONTHS

    REFLEX ABILITY: The baby starts to stretch his legs and can now kick.
  • 4 MONTHS

    PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT:
    Baby can sit up with the help of his mom.
  • 3 MONTHS

    PERCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT: Baby starts to get into eating and sleeping patterns.
  • 4 MONTHS

    PERCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT: Baby recognizes familiar faces
  • 4 MONTHS

    PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT: Baby smiles for the first time. His mom and dad are thrilled
  • 2 MONTHS

    REFLEX ABILITY: Baby can now support his upper body with his arms when laying on his stomach.
  • 5.4 MONTHS

    LANGUAGE DEVELPMENT: Baby says first word!
  • 6 MONTHS

    6 MONTHS
    PERCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT:
    Its 4th of July and the baby's parents can see the fireworks in the distance from their bedroom window. The father picks up the baby so he can see. When he points the firewors out, the baby's eyes widen and he starts making loud noises. The patterns are fascinating to him

    The baby has grown attached to his mother and father. When he sees them, he smiles and begins to laugh.
  • 6 .3 MONTHS

    LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT: Baby now responds to yes and no, and babbles
  • 7 MONTHS

    7 MONTHS
    PERCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT: The baby enjoys social play now. His parents set up play dates with the nieghbor's baby across the street. He seems to enjoy spending time with her.
  • 8 MONTHS

    LAUNGUAGE DEVELOPMENT: Dad teaches baby how to sign "I Love You"
  • 8 MONTHS

    PERCEPTUAL/ LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT: While playing with blocks, the baby keeps repeating the word "block"
  • 9 1/2 MONTHS

    PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT:
    Child is able to stand up and walk holding onto furniture.
  • 10 MONTHS

    PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT: Baby helps his mom get her Thanksgiving dinner by using a spoon, picking up food in very small portions
  • 10 MONTHS

    10 MONTHS
    LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT: Baby communicates through sounds, gestures, and facial expression
  • 11 MONTHS

    11 MONTHS
    PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT: Baby can walk now!
