Major inventions during the industrial revolution

James Watt
The most reliable steam engine was invented by james watt in 1775. This invention helped start the industrial revolution. The steam engine is able to harness the energy of steam and use that energy to move machinery. -
Eli Whitney
The cotton gin was invented which was a machine that removed cotton from it's seed. Before the cotton gin this job of seperating the cotton from the seed was very labor intensive. -
Robert Fulton
He invented a steam boat that would on a regular basis take people across the hudson river. This steam boat was just over sixty feet long. -
Samuel F. B. Morse
The most innovative telegraph was invented when samuel proved that signals could be transmitted by wire. He used pulses of current to move a thing to make dots on a piece of paper called morse code. -
Elias Howe
This was the first sewing machine that was commercially successful becuase it was different than all of the other machines. The needle moved up and down rather than side to side and it was controlled by a foot pedal instead of a hand crank. -
Cyrus Field
He invented the transatlantic cable. This a cable running under the atlantic ocean used for telegraph communications with europe. This also reduced the communication time from ten days (which used to be by ship) to a matter of minutes. -
Alexander Graham Bell
Alexander invented the telephone. He first discovered that you could hear sound over a wire. The first words that were spoken were Mr. watson come here I want to see you. -
Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison didn't exactly invent the light bulb, but rather improved on a 50 year old idea. People had invented light in the past, but nothing was pratical for home use until edisons invention. He was able to make one light burn for 13 and a half hours. -
Nikola Tesla
During his lifetime he invented the tesla coil, the tesla induction motor, flourescent lighting, alternating current, and 3 phase electricity. -
Rudolf Diesel
Rudolf invented the diesel engine. The diesel engines today are improved and refined versions of his original design. His engines were used to power pipelines, electric and water plants, cars and trucks, and marine crafts. His engine was were also used in mines, oil fields, factories, and transoceanic shipping. -
Orville and Wilbur Wright
These two brothers invented the airplane and had their first successful voyage in 1903 where the rose on it's own power carrying a man. It also flew at an even speed and descended without breaking. -
Henry Ford
In the late 1890's henry made his first horseless carriage in order to get funds for his improved model he wanted to make. In his factory he had one of the first constantly moving assembly lines which dramatically decreased the production time for each car.
