Many events led India to its independence, some were positive and some were negative, but all of them had a great impact on India. This timeline will show you the 10 most important events that influenced India's independence. -
Sepoy Mutiny
This is when a Company soldier Mangal Panday shot his adjutant Lt. Henry Baugh at at the Barrackpore parade ground. This word spread like wildfire and soon a lot of other rebellions started emerging from across the country. -
Indian National Congress
This is the formation of the Indian National Congress. THe party started negotiating terms with the British Empire and organize movements ever since. -
Arrival of Mahatma Gandhi
After fighting against the colonial empire in South Africa, Gandhi returned to India. There he started organizing peasants and laborers to protest against oppressive colonial laws. -
Jallianwala Bagh Genocide
In Amritsar, India’s holy city of the Sikh religion, British and Gurkha troops massacre at least 379 unarmed demonstrators meeting at the Jallianwala Bagh, a city park. Most of those killed were Indian nationalists meeting to protest the British government’s forced conscription of Indian soldiers and the heavy war tax imposed against the Indian people. -
The Khilafat movement
At the end of WW1, the British ousted the Ottoman Empire in Turkey and dethroned the Caliph and insulted millions of muslims. Enraged muslims launched campaigns against the British government. -
Delhi Assembly Bombing
Two men threw political handouts and smoke bombs at the Delhi Central Legislative Assembly. They both are rebels from Hindustan Samajwadi Prajatantra Sangha, the both got arrested, but they became the public face of youth resistance against British of India. -
Salt March
Mahatma Gandhi started the movement where civilians would refuse to follow certain laws formed by the British government. There were actually two phases to this movement. The first one was a non- cooperation movement while in the second one Gandhi and other rebels walked 388 km. -
Azad Hind Fauj
The Indian National Army was formed by Indian Nationalists in 1942 during WW1. Under the leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, its aim was to secure Indian independence from British rule. -
