The leader who was in charge was General Reginald Dyer. He was the military commander. The massacre happened when the British Indian army started shooting unarmed people. Men, women and children were killed for no reason. This event make the Indian people realize that it was time to fight for independence.

Gandhi went out in the sea and grabbed a lump of salt. This symbolizes the start of the Indians producing their own salt to sell.
