Clovis 1, or Chlodowech, was the first Catholic King of the Franks. He was the first king to unite all the Frankish tribes under one ruler. He was noted for defeating the roman governor Syagrius. -

Charlemagne Comes to Rule the Roman Empire
In 800, Charlemagne expanded the Frankish kingdom to include much of Western and Central Europe. During his rule, and with the influence of the Catholic Church, he brought about the Carolingian Renaissance, which was a revival of art, religion, and culture. -

In 987, the French that represented Ile de France elected a dynasty. This region soon achieved a measure of political unification and was known as France. This was later designated as the Holy Roman Empire. -

The French Revolution Overthrows King Louis XVI
Fed up with the tyranny of a king who was an absolute monarch, the people of France overthrew King Louis XVI and cut off his head. King Louis XVI was the only king of France to be executed. -
Marie Antoinette Executed
Marie Antoinette was the queen of France from 1774- 1793. She was wife to King Louis XVI, and like her husband, was executed as part of the French Revolution when the public became fed up with out of touch royalty. -
Napolean's reign
One of the greatest military commanders of all time, Napoleon came to power near the end of the French Revolution. Under his leadership and a number of battles, France came to control most of Europe. He was defeated by the British in the Battle of Waterloo. -
France and the World Wars
• 1914- 1918, 1940- 1944 France was greatly affected by both World Wars. Both resulted in France’s occupation, and saw many battles, destruction, and loss of life as Germany battled the Allies.
