Civil Rights Act of 1886
This act declared that all citizens born in the United States are all equal. This act helped minorities, women, children, and people with specials need pave the way to changes that are to come. -
Plessy V. Ferguson
During this case the Supreme Court ordered that it was legal to seperate humans as long each group had equal rights. Unfortunately, we all learn that seperate is not equal, but this ruling lead to many advances for minorities and that includes special education. -
Brown V. The Board of Education
During Brown V. The Board of Education, the Supreme Court ruled that seperate, but equal was unconstituational and that all schools were abolist the seperate but equal law. This was the building block for special education getting into public school districts. -
Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
Lyndon B. Johnson signed this act and it was an act that provided funding primary education. This funding also led to advocary groups across the country to allow access to public schooling for students with disabilities. -
Mills V. The Board of Education
This case established that all students in public schools were to have equal rights. Before 1972, public schools didn't allow students with special needs to attend school. After this case, the court found that free, public education services or suitable paid for private services must be provided to all students, even students with disabilities. -
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
This section was passed by President Richard Nixon and it made it illegal to discriminate in the work place. This act allowed mandated individual plans for disabled students who need special accomodations. -
The Education for all Handicapped Children Act
This law made sure the handicapped children had the basic rights, ideals, and responsibilities that all members of education had. This act made sure that students with disablitiles could not be excluded from public school and got the appropriate services needed.
