Sputnik was the first satellite that went into orbit around the, it was sent by USSR. -
US satellites
The US attempted the launch of the Vanguard Satellite during the same time period as Sputnik. We launched a satellite named Explorer 1 into Earth orbit. -

It was created by president Eisenhower in March 1958. -

There were 6 flights from 1961-1963. The goals of this project were to orbit a manned space craft around Earth, to investigate mans ability to function in space, and recover man and the space craft safely. -

Project Gemini

Also to perform methods of entering the atmosphere and landing at a preselected point on land. -
