    Martin Luther

    He emphasized the importance to learn to read. He thought the only way to learn was through scripture and the only way to learn scripture was to be able to read it yourself.

    He believed in unfolding, where children develop based on their own innate timelines. They would grow up to be whoever they were going to be at their own pace.

    Friedrich Wilhelm Frobel

    He was the "Father of Kindergarten" meaning garden of children. He created curriculum base on "gifts," "Occupations," songs and educational games. He believed kids should be taught something when they were ready to learn it.

    Robert Owen opened the first infant school to help children learn while their parents worked. He believed the environment was key to how children would develop.

    John Dewey

    He began child-centered curriculum and schooling. He was also the reason Progressivism began, which emphasizes children should learn their interests over subject matter. He believed schooling should reflect everyday life.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    An act passed by congress to help low income families pay for school related expenses. These could include extra math and reading tutoring as well as preschool and after school programs. Children eligible for free or reduced lunches were also eligible for this program.
  • National Defense Education Act (NDEA)

    An Act passed by congress to fund science, technology engineering and math (STEM) and foreign language in schools. This was a response to the Russian's launch of Sputnik, the first satellite, in 1957.
  • No Child Left Behind

    Another federal act that even more closely regulated what schools should be teaching based on what children should know at their ages. Introduced standardized tests and yearly progress standards for schools.
