The Civil war ends. As a result of the war the federal government gained more power and controll. One of the issues that the government wanted to impose was equality for all, including African Americans. The Thirteenth Amendment made all slavery illegal in the United States! -
Fourteenth Amendment
This amendment's purpose was to stop southern states from denying African Americans of their rights.This amendments clauses include equal protection and due process. This amendment also made sure that all African Americans were garenteed citizenship and all the right that come with it! -
Fifteenth Amendment
This important piece of legislature prevented African Americans from being denied the right to vote due to their race, or the fact that they were former slaves. -
Equal Pay Act of 1963
This was a Federal law that made it illegal to use race,gender,religion, or national orgin to determine a persons pay. This law was not only important to African Americans, but also other minority groups like hispanics, and women! -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
This was a major win for the Civil Rights Movement. This act gave African Americans more rights and freedoms. It also gave the Government more ways to enforce the laws and make sure they were carried out. This act really limited discrimination in the United States. -
Twenty Fourth Amedment
During this time period some polling places were using poll taxes to prevent poor African Americans from voting . This was very common in the south.The Twenty Fourth Amendment outlawed the usage of poll taxes at any election in the United States. -
The Voting Right Act of 1965
The Voting Rights Act was passed to increase African American voting numbers in the south. Some southern states like Alabama were stopping African Americans from voting through the use of things like literacy tests or poll taxes. This act stopped these practice and prevented voter discrimination in the south! -
Civil Rights Act of 1991
This law was very much needed. Prior to this law it was very hard for employees to bring up discrimination suits against their employers. This law made equality in the hiring process more realstic and sucessful. -
Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009
This was a necessay law that prevented unfair paying of employees based on sex, race, national orgin, age, religion, or a disability. This law doesn't just focus on discrinimatory paychecks, but also focuses on discrinatory practices. This law is important for stopping modern day discrimination!
