After the Civil War ended the South was in need of repair. Most business efforts went into rebuilding and expanding the South. -

Railroads were a great way to get across the country and this act made this mode of transportation safer. The Safety Appliance Act called for each railroad get an updated break system. -

The Ford Model T was one of the most affordable cars in the 20th century. The Model T was made on an assembly line which allowed the car to be made faster than any other car on the market. -
Commercial Flight
The first commercial flight happened on January 1st 1914. The flight was only 23 minutes long but it was the start of a whole new mode of transportation. -
Refrigerator
In 1918 the first automated refrigerator was made. These new automated refrigerators would allow for food to keep longer which would allow new products to be sold in stores. -
World War 1
During the war many women took over jobs typically given to men. Even women of minorities were able to work in department stores. -
The Great Depression
The stock market crash caused a lot of businesses to shut their doors. This caused lasting effects as many people were left out of work with no where to find a new job. -
World War 2
America was coming off the heels of the Great Depression when they started to focus their efforts on WW2. Women were inspired by figures like Rosie the Riveter and worked hard to help the war effort on the home front. War efforts also were focused one finding metal to make war crafts. -
Patent Act of 1952
The Patent Act of 1952 clarified previous patent acts set in the 1800's. Under this act to be granted a patent a person needed to describe their invention and the invention had to be unique unlike anything on the market. -
Korean War
Even though the Korean cost Americans less than WW2 because of how close the wars were it was hard on Americans. The war was payed for by taxation. -
Credit Cards
Although there were forms of credit before 1959 the first plastic credit card was made in this year. This was the start of the plastic credit cards we use today. -
Television Commercials
In the 1960's commercials were used within television programs much like we see today. Back in the 60's nine minutes of commercials was show with a sixty minute program. A sixty minute program today has around twenty two minutes of commercials. -
First Mobile Phone
Motorola was the first to have a mobile phone that wasn't attached to a car. This phone could only call people for a half an hour at a time. -
Vietnam War
The Vietnam War took a toll on the economy because of all the money that was being sent overseas. Interest rates were raised during this war. -
TRS-80
Computers opened up a whole new world for business. Computers allowed the general public to have access to educational and business programs at their fingertips. It is also important to note that the Apple 2 also came out in 1977. -
PowerPoint
Although Powerpoint was released to the public in the 1990's the idea of Powerpoint was conceived in 1987. Now Powerpoint is used in homes all over for presentations. -
NAFTA
The North America Free Trade Agreement was put into agreement in 1993. This agreement allowed free trade between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. -
Iraq War
The Iraq War caused a rise in oil pricing. Since Iraq was concentrated on fighting in the war they were unable to produce oil which caused prices to rise. -
MySpace
Social Media is huge when it comes to marketing. From Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, and more social media has been used to further business from the start. MySpace was one of the first social media sites but has since become less dominate in usage. -
iPhone 1
The iPhone 1 was the first in the series of phones still used today. This new line of phones gave consumers the capabilities they had on their computers in the palm of their hands. -
Recession of 2008 and 2009
In the recession we got a small taste as what the depression was like. People found them self out of work causing the unemployment rate to rise. Although it has been said that we have recovered from the recession we still have yet to get back to a good economy. -
Leahy-Smith America Invents Act
The Leahy-Smith America Invents Act changed the Patent Act set back in 1952. This allowed people to gain a patent if they were the first to file even if they weren't the first to invent. -
Chipped Credit Cards
Americans are making the ongoing switch to chipped credit cards. The goal of these chipped cards are to provide more security to the costumer. -
Dell 2 in 1 Laptop
Although the Dell 2 in 1 Laptop isn't the first laptop or the only laptop on the market it does show how far technology has come since the first computer. These new laptops are used for anything from business to school use.
