  • Immigration Day

    Immigration Day
When I, Natalie Nicola immigrated over to America for the first time to meet my husband it was very exciting. We wanted to come to America becuase we hear about the new job oppertunities and land that we could not get in Italy. Also we wanted to get away from all the wars and discrimination in Italy.
  • Boat Ride

    Boat Ride
The boat ride in steerage was very rough. I didnt have much money immigrating because my husband took most of it to start a job and pay for housing so I didnt get to ride in first or second class. The beds were very close together and the decks were super crowded. The food was okay but we didnt get much of it, which was fine becuase I did bring some food of my own. My husband took most of our belongings becuase our plan was for me to come over a few weeks after he did.

    Arrival Day (2)
Also if you were even the slightest bit sick you could not pass onto America because they did not want any new diseases brought on to their country. Luckly I am in perfect health! After the health inspection they asked you a few questions like, whats your name, where are you from. and are you meeting anyone when you reach America. Aparently it was a good thing if you were meeting a man because they ddint want young woman walking the streets with no job and no place to go.
  • Arrival Day

    Arrival Day
The arrival was very exciting considering we had been on the ship for almost two months. Boston was nothing like I expected it to be, so many buildings, stores, people, and horse carriges that I didnt know where to start. But getting to Boston wasnt as easy as you may think, first we had to pass through Ellis Island, which was more than I expected. The people there didnt speak my language, and they were very mean and harsh. If you didnt follow one task they asked you were thrown into jail.
  • A Temporary Home

    A Temporary Home
While me and my husband were in Boston to make a little money and gather some supplies for the move west we desided to settle down in a little hotelright outside of Boston. Me and my husband lived their for about a year to get ourselves started in America.
  • Moving West

    Moving West
Me and my husband are now moving west to buy some land and hopefully start a new life. We hope we will be able to make it with all of our belongings over the 2,500 mile streach to the Oregon Territory.
  • Homesteading act

    Homesteading act
The homesteading act was a law signed by president Abraham Lincolin. It was a law saying that us new settlers could have our land if we agreed to improve the land in any way we could. During the course of this act about 10% of the United States was given away to settlers old and new.
  • Buying Land

    Buying Land
Me and my husband are now buying some land in the Oregon Territory after our long treck. We are hopeing maybe there will be a land race where you get on horses and race to the land you want, but we dont think that is going to be the case. We will probably have to buy the land which we are prepared to do for not very much, we are hopeing,
  • Building and Settling

    Building and Settling
We have now bought the land and are ready to build and settle. We bought a land with many trees to cut down to help supply the wood to build our home. Most of the land was plain but since we saved up we are now on the wealthier side than the rest. We hope to build a good home and start a family. Also after we cut down all the trees we can use that land to start a farming buisness which was one of our biggest plans.
  • Conclusion

In conclusion me and my husband got our land and are ready for a new life. We have our farm all ready and we are growing strong. We are also following our plan to start a new family as I am pregnant with our first child. In all it was a very tough journey but it was worth it. Going thouht Ellis Island, staying in Boston for a while, and then the long ride over here, then the homestead act. But in all it was worth it and we are happy!
