Coming to America
Hello, my name is Rose McCoart. After coming from Ireland, and waiting for seven hours getting through Ellis Island, I finally passed through the gates. I don’t have a house to sleep in, so I have to sleep in the streets. The streets are very cold and it’s hard to sleep at night because I’m so cold. It’s been hard finding food because I do not have income, so I do not have any money. Also, it is hard to find work to do because so many people don’t like the Irish. -
Starting my life in America
I have finally found a place to sleep, and I live in a boarding home with three other people. It is now winter, and the nights are still cold even though I am living inside. Living in a boarding home with three other people is very hard, because you always feel too crowded all of the time. I got a job as a house cleaner. My job is very hard, and I get paid little for it. Since I don’t get paid much, I still can’t eat much food, because I don’t have enough money to pay for it. -
Travling to the West
I have now begun traveling to the West. I quit my job as a house cleaner, and left my boarding home. I am traveling horseback, and the nights of the traveling are very cold, and I only have my horse to accompany me. The days go on and on which makes me very tired to think about. I hope I get my 160 acres of land through the Homestead Act in the West, or else traveling to the West would be pointless. -
Arriving at the West
I have reached the West. I got amazing land that is filled with rich soil, so I won’t go hungry anymore because I’ll be able to grow my own crops. I’m currently building a house on my land for me to live in. My other immigrant friends who moved here are going to help me with this so I can start living here as fast as I can. All of the land goes on for miles, and it is beautiful here. -
Living in the West
My house was built extremely fast, all thanks to my friends that helped me. I have been able to grow food to share with people, and to sell and get money. I am a teacher right now and I love the job. Teaching little kids is great because I can make them have a better and smarter future. I enjoy spending my nights out on my poarch and watching the sunset. -
Continuing in the West
I have quit my job as a teacher after many years, at the age of 51. I am still getting money, however, by selling people my crops. I am no longer a teacher, but the kids I taught are going to go on to make this nation a better place. I live by myself still, and it does get lonely a lot of the time. I have my neighbors that are very nice, though, and I am thinking of getting another horse to keep me company.
