Many people rushed to claim and purchase land in Oklahoma during this time. The government had recently opened this land, and many Native Americans had their land stolen. Many riots and disagreements occurred because it wasn't a very organized event, so much of the land was claimed by multiple people. -

This was the first and largest federal immigration processing station. It is located just off the New Jersey coast. It brought more than 12 million immigrants into the United States. -

Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt became president after William McKinley was assassinated. He was the vice president under McKinley. Many didn't want him in charge because he disliked business monopolies. During his presidency, he showed the power that a president could have and highly promoted Progressive Era ideas. -
Ida Tarbell Publishes Her Article About Standard Oil
This article revealed to the public how the monopoly was affecting the country negatively. She also revealed the unfair practices used by the company. Eventually, her views were published as a best-selling book in 1904. -
Ford Motor Company is Founded
Henry Ford and 12 others invested in the company's creation. Henry Ford was always interested in engineering and also created the assembly line. The first car was sold that July. -
The 16th Amendment is Passed
This amendment gave Congress the right to have income taxes without any regard to population. This was appointed because of the Supreme Court case Pollock v. Farmers' Loan & Trust Co. -
Angel Island Opens to Process Immigrants
This station was opened off the West Coast to process Chinese and other Asian immigrants. In this station, these people were sent through a process to see if they could enter the United States. This later became a holding station when the government passed the law that Chinese immigrants could no longer enter. -
The 17th Amendment is Passed
This amendment changed the way the people voted. It allowed for direct election of the U.S. Senators. This amendment was created because of the disagreements with the previous legislative election mechanism. -
The Empire State Building Opens
The Empire State Building opened thirteen and a half months after construction began. This brought many more jobs to the United States despite the belief that the building would fail.
