Getting Into America
I was relived to get into the U.S. It took forever to get to America from Ireland on the boat. My name was Ben Mcarthy and the reason I was going to America was for free land in the west, also I didn't want to deal with the potato famine. If I didn't get into America I would have had no money, job, or a home. When i got into America it was like the start of a new life where i could be very sucessful.

The Railroad
I went to the railroads looking for a job because the city life was terrible, I just wanted to get a farm. So it didn't take long to get hirred. I started the next day, and we started moving west. This helped me get to the west faster, while at the same time, it gave me money and a place to sleep at night.

A big loss
When we were building the railroad through a tunnel, we had to use dynomite to get through it. While we were going through the tunnel, I didn't get to far away from the explosion and my whole left ear went deaf. It was horrible but it didn't stop me from heading west.

The Big Choice
I was working on the railroad for a long time. It was a couple years later and we were really far into the west. I remember after one day, they told us we were in Oklamhoma I knew what I wanted to do. I had saved up a ton of money and was ready to leave. I quit my job and followed people down to a town in Oklamhoma to registor for land. http://resourcesforhistoryteachers.wikispaces.com/USII.4 -
The Race
I made it to the city and signed up for the race. I bought a horse with some money I had saved up and waited for the day of the race. It was the day of the race. Everyone was desprite for land, my goal was to look for land that looked nice. Eventually, the race sarted, someone took the land I wanted, I.needed to find a back up plan. I got really worried, but then I saw it, the perfect land, I got it. http://www.ducksters.com/history/westward_expansion/homestead_act_land_rush.php -
My Farm
At first, it was tough, giving money to the government all the time. I bearly had enough money for clothes. I was in povernty. But,five years after I got the land I was doing great. I had so much land and it was all mine! I was making major profit and living a happy life. So I decided to stay on the farm for the rest of my life.
