Going to America
My name is Ellen McClen. Our potatoe crops were all destroyed from the potatoe famine which leaves us with nothing to sell for money. Me and my brothers have now decided to go to America because there is lots of new opprotunities and new jobs to choose from. It is sad that we will be leaving the rest of our family but we all know that it is the right thing to do. -
Just Arrived
Just got off the boat! It was such a long journey being in the lower part of the boat. I never thought that the constant rocking and the feeling of nausea would ever end. But now Patrick ( my older brother) says that we have to go through a lot of tests to be able to live hear. I feel like this will be a long day -
New job
Just got a new job at a clothing factory today. I am really glad because Patrick was the only one with a job and Rory (Who is six) is in grade school.Also paying bills has been hard lately scince Patrick is putting some of his money aside to move west. He wants to try to get free land by running in a race for it. A lady at my work was talking about it today, she said it was called the homestead act but less than half of all people actually get land. I think its just a waste of time and money. -
Moving West
Patrick has finnaly gotten me to agree on moving west even tho I would rather stay here in our small village just outside Boston. He feels that we would live such a happier life out in the west. But Rory is extremely exited to go to the wild west where there is a ton of adventure. -
On the Train
Finally had to say goodbye to our beloved little town. Even tho I am sad I still feel very exited to get back to farming even if it wont be potatoes this time. I see people walking beside the train to get to the same place we are. I am glad that Patrick saved us enough money to buy us train tickets. -
The west
The west looks so beautiful with the miles of long grass and it is a lot warmer than back east. Patrick will be the only one of us running in the race tomorrow because he wants me to stay behind with Rory since sound of gun shots scare him.So we will wait in town to find out if he has gotten any land. -
New land
Patrick got land! We are now living in a field with a few trees for shade and a stream flowing just south of where we are building our house I feel like this will be a very great home for us.
