Saddam Hussein moves his ranks into and takes control over Kuwait. -
Operation Desert Sheild begins
The first round of US forces set foot in Saudi Arabia. The operation they are following will be called Operation Desert Sheild. (ODS) -
UN joins the fight
The UN authorized any forces necessary to get Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait. -
Iraq is given a leave date
Saddam Hussein is given until January 15 to move all of his forces peacefully out of Kuwait -
Christmas overseas
Christmas comes and goes for the US soldiers. There has been no fighting, and they have only sat around and waited for Iraq to leave. -
Deadline day
It is January 15 and no sign of movement has been spotted from Saddam Hussein and his troops. Still, no force will be used until the next morning. -
Deadline passes
It is the day after the deadline, and Iraq is still firmly planted in Kuwait. The US reserves the right to fire, but fighting doesn't begin until later. -
Iraq strikes back
Iraq fires three scud missiles at the US troops in Israel. The US uses an antimissile for the first time, leaving Iraq scrambling to use more. -
Israel holds strong
President Bush announces that despite efforts and arguments being made against the following, Israel has promised not to respond to any and all attacks mounted against them. -
Many missiles
Iraq fires at least 10 scud missiles at Saudi Arabia, all but one of which are intercepted. One falls on an abandoned shelter, injuring 3 but no fatalities were accounted. -
Iraq torches Kuwaiti oil
Iraq sets fire to over 700 oil wells in Kuwait. -
Operation Desert Storm Begins
The first ground forces set foot in Kuwait. Their goal: to try and drive Iraqi soldiers out as quickly as possible. -
Saddam withdraws
Hussein announces that Iraqi forces will withdraw completely from Kuwait within 48 hours. -
Ceasefire
After 100 hours of fighting, Iraq agrees to a ceasefire. Iraqi forces have left Kuwait. -
Permanent ceasefire
Iraq accepts terms for a permanent ceasefire.
