At 3-4 weeks following conception, the development of the fetus' brain begins to occur. At these beginning stages a 3-millimeter-long neural tube begins to form, which is the basis of the rest of the fetus' brain development.

First Trimester (6 weeks after conception)
At this period of the pregnancy, the neutral tube completely forms and closes, which allows three regions of the brain to begin to develop, the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain. At this point the ventricles have also formed.

Second Trimester (13-16 weeks after conception)
At this point in the pregnancy the fetus' brain begins to respond to command of bodily functions, specifically movements that come from the hindbrain and the cerebellum. Furthermore, the brain begins to develop reflexes, as neurons continue to develop.

Third Trimester (28 weeks after conception)
At 28 weeks after conception, marking the beginning of the third trimester, the baby's brain becomes much more functional because the senses begins to develop. At this point the baby can begin to hear, smell, and touch.

Third Trimester (39 weeks after conception)
At 39 weeks after conception, the brain of the fetus triples in weight. Myelin begins to develop along neural path ways and grooves develop in the cerebrum which allows neurons to contain more surface area.

Birth
At birth, only the lower parts of the nervous system is well developed like the spinal cord and brain stem. The upper portions of the brain are not yet caught up with the lower portions. For example, the limbic system and cerebral cortex are still fairly primitive.

At two years old, the baby has developed a significant amount of synapses in it's brain. The baby begins to exhibit greater emotional responses. Learning, thinking and comprehension increases. The baby can walk, talk, and interact with others.
