What is Social Studies?
What is Social Studies? This Thursday and Friday students will create a mini poster to explain what they think social studies is about. Topics can be as broad or as narrow as students choose. 8/25-8/26 -
Current Events 1 - Introducing the Areas of Interaction
Introduction to the areas of interaction Students will be creating a mini poster displaying the current events they gathered for homework. They will be introduced to the IB areas of interaction and evaluate which areas apply to the current event they gathered. Due: 9/2 (A) 9/6 (B) -
Country Research Project
Students will each choose a country from a set list and begin research on it. They will create a Powerpoint presentation to display the facts and data required for the project. We will use two days in the lab to complete this activity. The countries that the students research will be used later in the geography unit. Due 9/7 (A) 9/9 (B) -

Geography
What makes a home? In this unit, we will discuss the 5 Themes of Geography and how they apply to students on a local level. We will later expand those ideas to the units we learn about. We will also focus on geography terms, map skills, and the continents and oceans. -
Geography Terms Booklet (Powerpoint or foldable)
Students will begin creating a booklet of geography terms to study in Powerpoint or as a foldable. When they are complete, we will create a 'master' booklet to study from for the geography terms assessment. Due 9/15 (A) 9/16 on computer (B) -
Continents and Oceans activity
Students will cut out and arrange the 7 continents on a blank map. They will label the continents and oceans, as well as create a compass rose and label other important parts of a map. -

5 Themes of Geography Foldable
Students will create a foldable as they learn about the 5 Themes of Geography. They will use their notes to answer specific questions in their foldable, and use the foldable for future assessments. -
Unit 1 - Summative Assessment
Students will fill in a map of their research country from earlier in the quarter. Over the course of 2 class periods, students will complete the requirements of the assessment using technology, their notes, and other resources. This assessment will end our geography unit. -

Students will learn about the dawn of civilization. Why do crop surpluses = civilization? Why in Mesopotamia? -

The Standard of Ur
Today we will learn about civilization through the study of artifacts. The focus of today's lesson will be the Standard of Ur, an ancient Sumerian artifact that depicts two not-so-positive aspects of civilization: inequality and organized violence. -

The Egyptian Pantheon + Pharaoh's activity
Students will follow a rubric and create posters detailing a particular pharaoh and god from Egypt's past. Completed assignments look amazing! -
The Rosetta Stone
Today we learned about the Rosetta Stone - the key to unlocking Egyptian hieroglyphics! Students have learned about the clay tablets that they will be creating in the following week. Students in this class period will learn how to transliterate their names into hieroglyphic script. -
Clay Tablets
Students will create clay tablets with three scripts on them. They will play the role of an ancient scribe. Individually, they will create a proverb after learning about them in class. They will transliterate the proverb to cuneiform and hieroglyphics and use similar tools to the ancient scribes to carve the message into a clay tablet. -
Ancient Civilizations Collaborative Learning Project
In groups, students will choose a topic and roles. The topics will vary, and revolve around the region we have been studying. The students will present information on these topics in class after a couple days of research. The focus on this project is for students to develop research and teamwork skills, as well as presentation and sourcing skills. -
