-Because of the rising support for abolition in america people began to be concerned with the growth of slavery as America moves west.
-Henry Clay settles the debate by declaring Maine a free state and Arkansas a slave state.
-this law helped keep the balance between the free and slave states. -
Te Nullification Crisis
-When tariffs were passed by the north the south felt that it did not benefit them in anyway.
-because they didn't feel that the tariffs benefited them they decided not to pay them.
-Andrew Jackson threatened to use force and that is when the south payed the taxes. -
Compromise of 1850
California would be a free state while the territories we got from mexico would be slave states. -
Fugitive Slave Act
-A law passed by congress that permitted slave catches from the south to travel north and capture escaped slaves -
Bleeding Kansas
-Before Kansas was going to enter the union there was going to be an election.
-5000 people from nearby Missouri came and voted for the slavery candidate illegally.
-Kansas eventually had a pro-slavery legislature. -
Dread Scott Decision
-Dread Scott was living in Illinois, a free state.
-He was sent back to the south under the ruling of the courts.
-The courts said that African Americans are not considered citizens under the constitution -
Attack on Harpers ferry
-John Brown wanted to motivate slaves to fight for their own freedom.
-He planed to attack the arsenal at the army base in Harper's Ferry.
-Brown sent a message to all the slaves in the area to come and fight at Harper's Ferry.
-None came and he died with his 3 sons. -
The Election of 1860
-even though Abraham Lincoln did not mention anything about abolishing slavery he won the election of 1860
