How I Came to Be (EVENTS) - Nicole Hui

  • Birth of Nicole

Nicole was born on September 22, 2004, in Milpitas, California.
  • Moved to Hong Kong

At around this date, my family had decided to move from California to Hong Kong where most of my relatives are at. This impacted me a lot as a person because it was an entirely new continent and country for me. The people in America are different than people in Hong Kong. Even though I was only 5, I do remember that I became less vocal in Hong Kong because I didn't understand the language as well and I felt significantly out of place.

    Sunday School

During my 8 years of study in Sunday School, I met a total of 8 Sunday school teachers and pastors. All of them impacted me as a person and nourished me in growth as a leader. There were many times where we had leadership opportunities in Sunday school and it was mandatory for us to take it. This helped me grow as a leader as I got more first-hand experience.
  • Transferring to ICS

When I transferred to ICS, it was a major stepping stone for me as a Christian. My old school was claiming to be a Christian school but it didn't really act like one. When I arrived at ICS, I definitely felt like I was bringing myself closer and closer to God. The Christian atmosphere in the school was amazing.
  • Grandfather's Death

This was the first time I had to go through a close family member's death and it made me stronger. I was pretty much out of it for around a month after his death but after I felt like I was stronger because I was at the point where I accepted it and embraced the fact that he was gone. It really gave me a taste of how harsh reality is and these things happen.

    Trip to Tai Shan

After my grandfather's death, our whole family decided to take a trip to his home village, Tai Shan. This was probably the most impactful trip I had ever taken because I got a chance to see how my grandfather came from a small village in China to starting his own company in Hong Kong. We also took the trip to fulfill something in my grandfather's deed which said that he would donate ALOT of money to the village. It was amazing to see how much of a hardworking man my grandfather was.
  • First Day of High School

This date marked the day of my first day as a freshman. It was a big day for me because I felt that I was really starting to grow up and my childhood is coming closer and closer to the end. High school was a big step from middle school because it was so different. We had more freedom but we also had more work and definitely more pressure. I felt like a huge weight was taken off my shoulders from middle school but another heavier and larger weight was put on my shoulders because of High School.

    Oxygen

Oxygen camp was a camp hosted by upperclassmen for the freshman. Since I was a freshman, I had the chance to attend. Although it was spiritual, it mainly brought me closer to a lot of the upperclassmen. This whole camp taught me that sometimes in life, you just have to put yourself out there and hope for the best. I saw that in all the oxygen leaders because they just put themselves out there for us to make friends with them which I really admire.
  • Brother went to College

This was the date where I sent my brother off to college. Terence and I were really never close, if people saw us together, they would probably think that we were strangers. But seeing him leave and seeing his empty room impacted me and made me regretful that we weren't close. People come and go all the time and now I have a bigger sense of getting close to people before as soon as possible.
  • Period: to

    ACSC Volleyball

This was the first ACSC trip I'v ever been on and it was so much fun. Our whole team bonded with eachother and I definitely came back to Hong Kong with a smile on my face. There was a part of the trip where we had to serve some kids. I was in charge of a kid who was very very very hyper. This helped me grow as leader because I needed to learn how to keep him 'in control' and have him stay by my side for the whole afternoon. It was difficult but also very funny.
  • Period: to

    VIDA

I attended VIDA this year and it was such a great experience. It impacted me as a person and as a leader. It truly brought me closer to God and shone a different light on discipleship. I don't remember how many times I cried because of the revelation of something. There were many times in VIDA where we had to step up as a leader too, so that also gave me the experience of being a leader.
