The War of 1812 began because of American resentment for the British interference with the new nation's trade. The war helped the U.S. to gain credibility among other nations. The Star Spangled Banner also resulted from the war. -

The Battle of Lake Erie was an important battle in the War of 1812. The U.S. sent Oliver Hazard Perry to command the American troops. The Americans defeated the British and were able to cut off British supply lines. -
William Sherman was Born
Willian Tecumseh Sherman was born into a distinguished family and was one of eleven children. After his father died, he ended up living with Senator Thomas Ewing, who later got him into the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated sixth in his class. -
Ulysses S. Grant was Born
Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio as Hiram Ulysses Grant. His family later moved to Georgetown, Ohio and he lived there until he moved to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point. His name was accidentally submitted as Ulysses Simpson Grant to the Academy, which later prompted him to change his name. -
Simon Perkins Founded Akron
Simon Perkins was the man who surveyed the city of Akron. He lived in the Connecticut-Western Reserve his whole life. There are many pkaces in Akron that honor him as their founder, such as Perkins Middle School. -

The Canal Era
The building of the Ohio and Erie Canal by Irish immigrants brought many jobs and immigrant families to Akron. Akron became a melting pot of cultures of people. City life thrived and became downtown Akron. -
The Underground Railroad in Akron
Akron was a key part of the Underground Railroad before and during the Civil War. As part of a northern state, Akron opposed slavery. Many famous abolitionists lived in or near Akron, such as John Brown -
Oberlin College Opens
Oberlin College was, at the time, very influential in the areas of social justice and equality. It was one of the first schools to admit African Americans and women. The college is still open, 175 years later, and continues to influence the community around it. -
The Oregon Trail Opened
The Oregon Trail was created as a way for settlers to easily travel across the U.S. It began in Missouri and ended in Oregon. The first group to travel on the trail stopped 200 miles short of Oregon but they proved that it was possible to follow the trail through the U.S. -
The Pottery Industry Starts
The pottery industry started in Akron with the Akron Pottery. The industry helped the economy and the citizens of Akron. The industry was even able to thrive in the "panic of 1873." -
The Civil War Begins
The Civil War began because of a series of disagreements between the free states and the slave states. The slave states began by seceeding from the U.S. to create their own nation: the Confederate States of America. The war officaially began when the Confederate army opened fire on Fort Sumner and forced it to lower its American flag. -
Standard Oil Co. Opens
John D. Rockefeller, along with two partners, establoshed the Standard Oil Company. The men purchased oil wells in Cleveland, Ohio and Titusville, Pensylvania. Three years later, the company became Rockefeller and Andrews Oil Company when Rockefeller bought out one of his partner's interest in the company. -
The Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation greatly influenced the change in the focus of the Civil War. Before the Proclamation, the purpose of the war was to preserve the Union, but, after the Proclamation, the purpose was to end slavery in the U.S. Therefore, it was an important factor in the fight for freedom. -
The Civil War Ends
The Civil War ended when the Confederate Army surrendured after four years of fighting. The Union had captured the Confederate President, which, in turn, caused an end to the resistence. The Confederacy joined the U.S. and the country began to re-build itself. -

Oatmeal Industry Started
Ferdinand Schumacher, a German immigrant, founded his oat mill in Akron, Ohio. During the war, the demand for oatmeal increased, which caused a major increase in the oat mill industry and to Akron's economy. He was referred to as the "Oatmeal King" and he brought jobs and money to Akron by creating his oat mill. -
Match Industry Started
The match industry was a major industry in Akron in the late nineteenth century. The main match producer was the Diamond Match Company located in Barberton. There was a high demand for matches due to the growth in the oil industry. The match industry brought jobs to Akron and Barberton and put Akron on the map. -
Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. Opened
Charles Goodyear discovered the process of vulcanization. F.A. Seiberling later named his rubber and tire company, which opened in Akron, after him. This company is famous for making blimps for World War II. These blimps can be seen today throughout Ohio for advertisement purposes. -
Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. Opened
Firestone was one of the four main rubber companies in Akron. It was the first company to supply Henry Ford. To house their workers, the company created Firestone Park. The company faced many strikes and was eventually bought out in 1988 by Bridgestone. -
World War 1 Begins
After the Archduke of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and his wife are assassinated, Austria-Hungary delcares war on Syria because they believe that Syria was behind the assassination. Many other nations joined the fight because of the alliances that they had with other countries. The U.S. Began the war by staying neutral but eventually joined when a German ship sank an American ship. -
General Tire Co. Opened
William F. O'Neil founded General Tire in Akron, Ohio. By 1918, Gernal Tire made the oversized General Jumbo, an industry original, which allowed for more quality tires, to help compete with other tire companies. This company helped to create more jobs in Akron. -
Prohibition
After many years of trying, an amdenment that banned the sale of alcohol was created. Prohibitionists rejoiced but the law would be hard to enforce. Just minutes after the amendment passed, a group of men robbed a train that was carrying liquor. -
World War I Ends
World War I officially ended after the Treaty of Sevres ended fighting in the Ottomon Empire. Before that, many nations ratified the Treaty of Versailles and joined the League of Nations. The U.S., on the other hand, did not agree to join the League of Nations. -
The Nineteenth Amendment was Ratified
After years of protest, women finally gained the right to vote when the Nineteenth Amendment was created. The amendment officially became part of the Constitution when Tennessee became the thirty-sixth state to agree to it- creating a three-fourths majority. This right forever changed voting in the U.S. -
The Great Depression Begins
The Great Depression began with the stock market crash of 1929. When people began to panic about their money, the banks were unable to function properly which lead to an increase in poverty throughout the U.S. Additionally, Europeans stopped buying American products after then depression reached them, which worsened the situaltion. -
World War II Begins
World War II began when Germany invaded Poland. France and Britian responded by declaring war on Germany. Poland was quickly defeated by German and Soviet forces. -
The Great Depression Ends
The Great Depression ended largely because of the start o World War II. The production of miliatry equipment helped to heal the economy. Additionally, new jobs were created because of the war which lowered the unemployment rate. -
World War II Ends
The Second World War ended when Japan surrendered after the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on two Japanese cities. Earlier, Germany surrendured eight days after Hitler's suicide. The war became the most deadly conflict ever seen with about fifty-five million deaths worldwide. -

The Korean War
The Korean War started when North Korean soldiers crossed the border into South Korea. American soldiers tried to stop, or at least delay, North Korean units but were unsuccessful at first. The war ended after an armistice was signed and after two million lives were lost. -
The Cuban Missle Crisis
The Cuban Missle Crisis started when the Cuban government began to build sites for nuclear missiles. The missiles were supposed to prevent an invasion from the U.S. The Cuban government later stopped construction after President Kennedy got word of the missiles- so that they could avoid war.
