Henry IV is excommunicated
Angered over the banning of lay investiture the young emperor Henry IV ordered that Pope Gregory VII to step down from the papacy. After that was declared, Pope Gregory excommunicated Henry IV. -

Henry invades Italy
Angered over his excommunication from the Church, Henry invade an Italian town known as Canossa looking fro Greogory. Henry then stood outside where Gregory was staying in the snow. Gregory eventually ended Henry's excommunication. Although he was humiliated Henry rushed home with good news. -

Concordat of Worms
After years of disputing between Gregory and Henry's successors, an agreement was eventually reached. It was called the Concordat of Worms. It stated that the Church could appoint a bishop but the emperor could veto that appointment. -

The reign of Frederick
After Germany realized that they needed a stronger ruler to keep peace they elected Frederick I. Frederick was a very powerful and forceful ruler, he invaded several cities many times, and had stong military tactics. -

Battle of Legnano
When disputing with the Pope, battle occurred. Fredrick's army faced the soldiers of the Lombard League (the Pope's army; Italian). The Italians won. Fredrick eventually made peace with the Pope. -
Charlemagne is crowned Roman Emperor
Crowned by Pope Leo III this event signified the beginning of different leaders between the Church and government. Set up future conflicts between Church and State. -
Otto I Allies with the Church
Otto was crowned in 936.Otto was a very powerful ruler. He formed an alliance with the Chuch to try to limit the noble's power. Otto did this by gaining support of the clergy. He invaded Italy, which he was rewarded with being crowned emperor.
