  • American Anti Slavery Society

    Two abolitionists created this society in order to spread the message of slavery to the public. They gave speeches, held prive meetings, and mailed their pamplets to other slavery supporters.They did this by using the method of trying to examples of how inhumane slavery was.
  • Burning abolistionist literature in Charleston, South Carolina

    People who supported slavery had reacted very poorly to the distribution of pamphlets by the founderss of the American Anti Salvery Society. They had held mobs in Charleston in order to burn the writing of the two founders.
  • Gag Rule

    The rule was that when abolistionists sent petitons to the US Governemnt, the House of Representatives simply refused to read or sign the petitions. This rule made it so that it silenced any opinion that abolitionists had on slavery.

So they came up with the following comprimises:they declared California was a free state, they declared they allowed Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada to take a stae vote on whether to allow slavery or not, and they ended sslave trade and auctions in Washington D.C.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    It required US marshals and deputies recapture escaped slaves from the North because the North was helping those slaves escape. It aslo made it harder for slaves to prove their freedom.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    This is a book that was published in response to the Fugitive Slave Act. The book talked about how dehumanizing slavery for slaves. This book caused other people to become abolitionists and support Anti Slavery.

    This act got rid of the Missouri Comprimise and allowed Kanas and Nebraska to vote on whether to vote on slavery or not, This caused quite a stir among abolitionists.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Because of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, people were moving into Kansas to try and influence the vote on whether to allow or abolish slavery. Because of this, there was disagreement among settlers about what action to take, and this led to violence. This resulted in 200 casualties.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    A slave named Dred Scott had sued for his own freedom that he was free but the Supreme Court rued agaisnt him and decideed that no slave could be a US Citizen, so it meant he wasn't free, and he wasn't allowed to sue. It also ruled that Congress had no power to outlaw slavery.
  • John Brown' s Raid

    John Brown and 22 others raided a town in Virginia, to try and free slaves. In this, they captured the most important citizens and held them hostage. He was eventually captrued and hanged.

    The South thought that Abe might try and end slavery. They also opposed him so much he wasn't on the ballot in most Southern States.
