    Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
    On June 28, 1914, the heir of the Austro-Hungarian throne was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a member of a Bosnian Serb nationalist group. The objective of the assassination was to free Herzegovina and Bosnia from the Austro-Hungarian empire, but this finally led to the beginning of World War I

    Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia
    On July 28, 1914, Austro-Hungary declared war on Serbia. This happened because Serbia didn´t accept the terms of the ultimatum that Austria sent them on July 23, after Archiduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist.

    German troops enter Belgium
    To avoid the French fortifications along the French-German border, the German troops had to cross Belgium and attack the French Army by the north. Belgians refused letting them cross their country, so on August 4, 1914, the Germans decided to enter by force and invade Belgium.

    When World War I began, Italy was a partner in the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austro-Hungary, but decided to remain neutral. However, Austro-Hungary was Italy´s historical enemy, so on May 23, 1915, Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary, becoming part of World War I on the side of the Allies (France, Russia and Great Britain).

    On April 4, 1917, the USA Senate voted in favor of declaring war on Germany by a vote of 82-6. Two days later, the USA did it. This decision was made because of the submarine´s attacks of Germany to american´s ships.

    On November 7, 1917, the seat of goverment, the Winter Palace in St Petesburg, fell to the Bolsheviks, imposing the communist method in Russia. About 20 000 Red Guards, sailors and soldiers attacked the Winter Palace.

    Russia signs armistice with Germany
    On December 15, 1917, an armistice was signed by Russia and the Central Powers (Bulgaria, Germany and Austro-Hungary). The armistice took effect two days later and Russia was exited from World War I, although fighting continued until the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed.

    Russia signs the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
    The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was the peace treaty signed by the new Bolshevik government of Russia and the Central Powers (Germany, Austro-Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey). It was signed on March 3, 1918, at Brest-Litovsk. It ended Russia's participation in World War I.

    Armistice
    On November 11, 1918, the armistice was signed at Le Francport as a ceasefire that ended hostilities between Germany and the Allies. The armistice wasn´t the end of World War I but stopped the fighting on the Western Front while the terms of peace were discussed.

    Treaty of Versailles signed
    The Treaty of Versailles codified peace terms between Germany and the victorious Allies (USA, Great Britain, France, Italy). It was signed on June 18, 1919 at the Palace of Versailles in Paris.
