History of The Riders for Health By buddie_ricardo Period: 1970 to 1997 History of the Riders for Health 1981 Ali Ceesay maintains remaining health vehicles 1981 due to a failed government coup, rebels destroyed many Ministry of Health service vehicles 1983 the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) donated 20 motorcycles to the Gambia 1986 Barry and Andrea Coleman begin raising money with Randy Mamola 1986 Ali Ceesay joined Save the Children Fund (SCF) as a driver, handyman, and assistant to the field director 1988 Mamola and the Colemans were invited to see how the funds they raised helped out 1989 Barry and Andrea Coleman create the riders for health 1989 with Barry Coleman’s guidance, SCF recommended that the Gambia MoH form a motorcycle task force. 1991 Riders established a training and preventative maintenance system for motorcycles in Lesotho. 1996 SCF ceases operations in the Gambia. Riders becomes independent.
