    A very Controversial act happened at the 1968 Olympics when two African-American men who placed 1st and 3rd for the Men's 200m athletic race raised their fists in the air bowed their heads and saluted. It was seen as a way of protesting against the lack of civil rights there were for balck people at this time.

However when one of the swimmers dropped out to let Ian Thorpe take his place, Ian Thorpe edged out his opponent, Grant Hacket, to take home the Gold Medal.
