Sputnik
On October 4, the Soviet Union launched the world’s first manmade satellite into orbit, known as Sputnik. This scared many Americans it seemed, the Soviets had been focusing on expanding the boundaries of technology. This influenced the proposition of a solution called “galactic network” of computers that could communicate with each other.

Leonard Kleinrock
Leonard Kleinrock is given credit for the concept that has developed into the world wide web. In 1961 he wrote about ARPNET the forerunner of the internet. Publishing he’s first paper in on digital network communications Titled “Information Flow in Large Communication Nets”.

J.C.R Licklider
IN 1962 Kleinrock along with other innovators such as J.C.R Licklider provided the backbone of the internet we know today. Licklider a scientist from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and ARPA.

Packet Switching
A M.I.T. scientist developed a way of sending info from one computer to another using packet switching. He tested this idea with two computers at MIT Lincoln Lab, breaking data down into block/ packets before sending to its destination.

Node to node
In 1969 the first message is delivered on computers by ARPAnet. The first computer was located in UCLA’s and Stanford’s research lab. Stanford only received “LO” before the ARPA network crashed, the original message was “LOGIN. At end of that year UCLA’s (NMC), Stanford Research Institute, University of California-Santa Barbara and University of Utah install nodes were connected by ARPAnet.

BBN’s Ray Tomlinson introduces network email. The Internet Working Group (INWG) forms to address need for establishing standard protocols. Networking email is an email you send to connect or talk with people you may or may not know, or the people that you have met at a particular event. A network email signature is used when you have to discuss some important matter regardless of how long you have known each other. -
Fathers of the internet
The first internet service provider a “protocol for packet network interconnections ” an introduction of a commercial version of ARPAnet named Telenet.Many call them the father if the internet Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn launch. Domain Name System
The Domain Name System (DNS) establishes the familiar .edu, .gov, .com, .mil, .org, .net, and .int system for naming websites. This is easier to remember than the previous designation for websites, such as 123.456.789.10.

NSFNET
The National Science Foundation’s NSFNET goes online to connected supercomputer centers at 56,000 bits per second. Over time the network speeds up and regional research and education networks, supported in part by NSF, effectively expanding the Internet throughout the United States. The NSFNET was essentially a network of networks that connected academic users along with the ARPANET.

Tim Berners-Lee
A computer programmer in Switzerland named Tim Berners-Lee introduced the World Wide Web. An internet was a way to send files from one place to another. A “web” of information that anyone on the Internet could retrieve information. At CERN, develops Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML). This technology continues to have a large impact on how we navigate and view the internet today.

Mosaic
A group of students and researchers at the University of Illinois developed a sophisticated browser that they called Mosaic; offered a user-friendly way to search the Web. It alowed users to see words and pictures on the same page for the first time and to navigate using scrollbars and clickable links. Companies started websites of their own, on the internet.

The Web could be used for commercial purposes, companies of all kinds hurried to set up websites of their own, and e-commerce entrepreneurs began to use the internet to sell goods directly to customers. The phrase "surfing the internet" is popularized.

The number of websites reaches 600 and the White House and United Nations go online. The number of computers connected to NSFNET grows from 2,000 in 1985 to more than 2 million in 1993. The National Science Foundation leads an effort to outline a new internet architecture that would support the burgeoning commercial use of the network.

Netscape Communications
Netscape Communications is born. Microsoft creates a Web browser for Windows 95.Yahoo! is created by Jerry Yang and David Filo, two electrical engineering graduate students at Stanford University.
