Professor Marcello Malpighi of the Universty of Bolonga was the first to note that fingerprints have distinct marks on them. -

British Use Fingerprints on Contract
Sir William James Herschel wrote a contract with the natives from India and required a handprint from the natives on the contract as a sign of a fingerprint. After this he reqired a print of two fingers on all documents that he had. -

Edmont Locard created the 12 point system which said that if two fingerprints had at least 12 points the same then they are a match. -
FBI Adopts FIngerprints
The FBI adopts the use of fingerprints through a Congressional Act. -
AFIS Created
The Automated Fingerprint Identifaction System is created and starts to anaylze fingerprints using computers.
