  • American School for the Deaf founded

    American School for the Deaf founded
    Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Lauren Clerc founded the American School for the Deaf. Clerc was deaf himself. The school is located in Hartford, CT. This was the first permanent school for the Deaf in the US.

  • AAMR

    AAMR
    In 1876 the American Association on mental retardation, which is also known as AAMR was established. This is the largest and oldest association that deals with mental retardation. The American association on mental retardation promotes research, more effective practices, and rights for individuals with intellectual disabilities. AAMR Has been renamed to the American Association on intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • The First Special Education Class

    The First Special Education Class
    Elizabeth Farrell was the first person to teach a Special Education Class. She taught the class in NYC. Farrell’s class was the catalyst that special education classes needed, which began developing in many schools. She was later appointed the Director of the special education program.
  • President Panel on Mental Retardation

    President Panel on Mental Retardation
    In 1961, President John F. Kennedy chose 27 people to a panel. Some of the people were scientists, doctors, and others that were going to make a plan of action for mental retardation. They came up with new programs that emphasized how important special education is along with training and rehabilitation.

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act was signed by Linden B. Johnson in 1965. This act provided funding for programs of eligible schools and districts to raise academic achievement and address challenges. The primary objective of the act is equal opportunity for all students, such as students who live with disability, mobility problems, learning difficulties, poverty, or students who need to learn English.

    Section 504 Rehabilitation Act
    In 1973 the rehabilitation act helped protect people from being discriminated based on their disability. No one should have to be excluded from participation, denied any benefits, or discriminated against. Disabled students must receive equal access for their schooling and must be provided any necessary accommodations for them to be successful in a general education classroom.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    The ADA grants individuals with disabilities their civil rights. It mandates disabled individuals to not be discriminated against and requires public places to provide necessary accessibility for those disabled individuals.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    An amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Act of 1965, 2001 No Child Left Behind Act required all students, including students with disabilities, to be proficient and reading in math by 2014. These new goals are to improve schools performance across the country by administering specific academic standards.

    IDEA
    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 calls called for changes for state and local accountability. That school would provide adequate instruction and intervention for their students. This act will help students learn more efficiently by promoting accountability for enhanced parent involvement, providing more flexibility, and decreased paperwork loads.

    Every Student Succeeds Act
    President Barack Obama re-authorized on December 10, 2015, The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The other version of this act was The No Child Left Behind Act, which was an in acted in 2001. This act makes sure that every state measures performance in reading, math, and science. It also requires each state to have a state report card that is accessible to the parents online and it provides the students test performance.
