Parents didn't have many options for educatiing their children with disabilities, other than to home school them or put them in expensive private schools. Parents formed advocacy groups to bring the educational needs of children with disabilities into the public eye. -
President's Panal on Mental Retardation
Parents had to form advocacy groups to help bring the educational needs of their children with disabilities to the public eye. In 1961 John F. Kennedy created the President's Panel on Mental Retardation. -
Title VI
In 1965 Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which provided funding for primary education and is seen by advocacy groups as expanding access to public education for children with disabilities. -
2 Supreme Court Decisions apply the equal protection argument to students with disabiiities
The courts take the position that childre with disabilites have an equal right to access education as their non-disabled peers. Even though there is no existing Federal law some students begin going to school as a result of these court decisions. -
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

Family Education Rights and Privacy Act
This allowed parents the right to have access to all personally identifiable information and collected or used by a school district regarding their child. -
(EAHCA) The Education for All Handicapped Children Act
This Act mandated that all school districts had to educate children with disabilitiies. -
The final federal regulations for EAHCA are released
The final regulations are enacted. These federal regulations provide a set of rules which school districts must adhere to when providing an education to students with disabilities. -
EAHCA is ammended and now called IDEA
It adds transition services for students with disabilities. School districts are now required to look at outcomes and assisting students transitioning from high school to post secondary life. -
Americans with Disabilities Act is enacted
ADA adopts the 504 regulations as a part of its statute. More 504 plans start to become more common in school districts. -
IDEA reauthorized
This amendment requires all students with disabilities to be included in all state and district wide assessments. It also requires
regular education teachers to now be a part of the IEP team. -
No Child Left Behind
This law requires all students even those with disabilities to be proficient in math and reading by 2014. -
IDEA reauthorized
