    Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka
    The decision that the United States Supreme Court made in this Brown vs. Board of Education of Topek case ended segregation. This happened May 17, 1954. The court ruled that the laws establishing racial segregation in public schools were unconstitutional. The decision stated that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.

  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
    This Act was passed in 1973. It was the first disability civil right act to be enacted in the US. This act prohibits discrimination against people with diabilities in programs that receive federal financial assistance. Section 504 protects children and adults with disabilities from exclusion or unequal treatment in schools, jobs,or communities.

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    This act required public schools that ran with federal funds to provide equal access to education and a free meal for children with mental and physical disabilities. It also required schools to create an educational plan with parent input.

  • Individualized Education Plan

    Individualized Education Plan
    IEPs are created with the help of parents and a team of professionals (Teachers, Behavior Specialists, Occupational Therapists, etc) that has been spending time with the student. IEPs have to be revised every year to keep track and make changes in it if needed. An IEP describes how a child is currently doing academically and behavior wise. It also describes all the services that the child needs.

    Board of Education of Hendrick Hudson Central School District vs. Rowley
    After school denied Amy Rowley and interpreter, her parents filed suit in the U.S. District Court. This was the first time ever that the court had interpreted any protion of the EHA. The judge concluded that Rowley was not receiving a "Free Appropriate Education" and that she was lacking an interpreter. This case redefined "FAPE".

    NCLB's purpose is to close the achievement gap. This act required all schools receiving federal fundings to administer standarized tests anually to every student. This act requires states to provided highly qualified teachers to all students.
