  • Brown v. Board

    Brown v. Board
    It was the first time the Supreme Court ruled that school segregation was not constitutional. It was the foundation for future legislation to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities. Students for disadvantage backgrounds should not be excluded from public education.
  • ESEA

    ESEA
    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) was ruled during the presidency of Lyndon Johnson in 1965 as a part of the “War of poverty.” As mandated in the act to provide to all children equal opportunities to achieve an exceptional education. It also emphasized high standard and accountability.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation Act

    Vocational Rehabilitation Act
    The Vocational Rehabilitation Act prohibited discrimination against students with disabilities. Prohibited discrimination in employment on basis of physical or mental handicap. Also, defines handicapped person and appropriate education. It was the first act to address the notion of equal access to people with disabilities through the removal of architectural barriers.
  • Florida Diagnosis and Learning Resources System (FDLRS)

    It is a project of the Florida Department of Education that helps School Districts Exceptional Students Education programs statewide. It has four functions: child find by promoting public awareness of programs an services, screening, placement for children with disabilities; parents services by providing information, training and support to the families;human resources development to educators providing professional learning opportunities; and technology

    EAHCA
    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act required that all the states that accepted money from the federal government were required to provide equal educational opportunities for children with disabilities, providing a free meal per day. It also defined least restrictive environment (LRE) and required individualized education programs (IEP)

    EAHCA Amendment
    The Education of All Handicapped Act Amendments include includes a national agenda related to more and better services for young children with special needs. Also, includes services for infants and preschool children and their families.

    Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
    American with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law that extends the protection of individuals with disabilities against discrimination in the private sector. It extends benefits like equal opportunities to employment and public services, accommodations, transportation and communications.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA)

    Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA)
    IDEA replaces EAHCA and incorporates “people-first” language to refers to people with disabilities. Added two new categories of disabilities: autism and traumatic brain injury. Incorporates transition services, confidentiality f or students and parents. Expands special education services, adding social work, assistive technology, rehabilitation services and bilingual education programs for students with disabilities.

    No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
    No Child Left Behind (NCLB)The act requires schools to rely on scientifically based research for programs and teaching methods. The act requires that all school receive fund to administrate standardized tests increasing accountability. It gives the students and families the opportunity to school choice. Pay attention on minority populations creating high expectations for all students.

    Every Student Success Act (ESSA)
    Every Student Success Act (ESSA) is the first act that narrow the role of the federal government in elementary and secondary school giving the states and districts significantly more control in determining the standards. ESSA maintains annual standardized tests and requires to offer college and career counseling for all students, regardless of race, ethnic y, income, proficiency in English or disabilities.
