History of Special Education and Inclusive Education

  • First School for Special Education

    The Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons was a school that was for deaf children and "dumb" at this time meant unable to speak. This school would receive it's funding from the parents who wanted their child to attend this school. They would teach basic subjects to all the students.
  • Council for the Education of Exceptional Children

    The Council of Exceptional Children is an organization that advocates for children with disabilities. They contract their own teachers that they feel will help these children succeed. The CEC states that these individuals deserve the best education possible.
  • The ARC

    The National Association for Retarded Children was the original name for the ARC when it was first introduced. In this time period, there were no programs or after-school activities for students with disabilities. Which is when this act came into place from parents who wanted to make a change for these individuals.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    The Brown v. Board of Education case ruled that schools shouldn't be segregated. This meant that black and white children would be going to school together. This case also paved the way for future legislation that would protect rights of individuals with disabilities to be able to attend public schools. Link text
  • Association for Children with Learning Disabilities

    A group of parents from Chicago decided to go to a conference that had the parents and professionals question why there isn't a place for these special children to try and grow in and receive more information for parents who don't know what to do. They created this association which is found in many cities today.
  • IDEA Act

    President Ford signed into the law of Education for all Handicapped Children Act, which is now known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This act meant that all public schools would open their doors to children with disabilities and giving them the same opportunities as the other children. IDEA is to protect students with disabilities, including their families.

  • Board of Education of Hendrick Hudson Central School District v. Rowley

    Amy Rowley was a student in this school district and she was deaf. The school district refused to provide her with a sign language interpreter which is why her parents decided to sue the school district. This resulted in the court realizing that this school district was violating the IDEA act.
  • American with Disabilities Act

    The ADA is to prohibit discrimination against individuals who have disabilities. It guarantees equal opportunities for these individuals other aspects as well, including employment. This was a major accomplishment.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind act was made to straighten our public school system and children. They created a standard that all children, including special education children, would need to pass in order to go onto the next grade. This included annual testing in math, and reading.
  • American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

    This act was signed by President Obama is 2009. It had many different factors in it but in this act was promised that they were going to project more money for the funding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This resulted in $12.2 billion being funded to the IDEA Act.
