  • Columbia Institute

    Columbia Institute for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind was allowed to grant college degrees by the U.S. Congress. Making this the first college established, in the world, for people with disabilities.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    U.S. Supreme Court that upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation laws for public facilities as long as the segregated facilities were equal in quality – a doctrine that came to be known as "separate but equal". This court case later had an effect on students with disabilities.
  • International Council for the Education Exceptional Children

    Later renamed, Council for Exceptional Children, was founded to help to improve education experiences for students gifts and talents or disabilities. One of its primary goals was to organize and establish professional standards.
  • National Association of Parents and Friends of Retarded Children

    Later renamed The Arc, was founded to research and advocate for the research on intellectual and developmental disabilities.
