Perkins Institution for the Blind
Perkins Institution was founded in Boston, Massachusetts by Samuel Gridley Howe. Perkins was the very first school chartered for students who were blind. Samuel Gridley Howe taught his students to see the world using their eyes and their fingertips. They helped create a new system for printing and reading. -
The Arc
The Arc is an organization that serves people with intellectual disabilities. The advocates wanted their loved ones to lead fulfilling lives in the community and not in an institution. The Arc continues to advocate through the state and federal legislation. -
Elementary and Secondary Education Act
This act was passed in 1965 to protect and provide students who are from disadvantaged backgrounds with equal access to the public education system. One of the ESEA provisions established free and reduced lunch. This act was also put in place for students who need additional support to benefit from public school education programs -
Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia
This case excluded handicapped children from public schools. In the lawsuit they wanted to make sure that all students regardless of their disability receive free and appropriate education. As an end result special needs would be identified and will be provided with a special education. -
#4 Education for All Handicapped Children Act
This act required states to provide free and appropriate education from ages 5-18 years old. This act first defined least restrictive environment which allowed students with disabilities to learn in a general education classroom. It also requires individualized education program. -
Honing v. Doe
This case benefited individuals with emotional and/or behavior disorders. From the ruling it states that schools could not expel children for behavior that is related to their disability. Behavioral issues from a student with disabilities are documented in an IEP -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
Requires all students with disabilities continue to receive services, even if they are expelled from school. They grant students with disabilities equal access to general education curriculum. They also provide a behavior management plan included in the students IEP to resolve behavior issues. -
#4 No Child Left Behind Act
This act requires 95% of students with disabilities participate in statewide assessments. This act also advocates for inclusion. Inclusion lead to informed teaching, improved learning, learning strategies, social skills and more. -

This website is a organization that supports and advocates with individuals with autism and their families. It was founded by Bob and Suzanne Wright who were grandparents of a child with autism. Their goals are to provide global awareness, increase research and access to care and support, and also a better understanding of the breadth of the autism spectrum. -
