Soccer was the first team sport added to the Olympics, in 1900. At first it was only a men's competition, in 1996 a women's event was added. In 1900-1904 tournaments were originally composed of demonstration matches, but have subsequently been upgraded to official status by the IOC with medals attributed to the teams based upon the match results. -

The first FIFA World Cup was held in Montevideo, Uruguay. Uruguay was favourite not only for its Olympic gold medal in 1924 and 1928. The country was also celebrating its 100th anniversary in 1930. Uruguay was the first champion of the FIFA world cup, 2nd. Argentina, 3rd. USA, 4th. Yugoslavia.
The first game was played aat the brand-new Estadio Centenario Montevideon on July 18 1930. -
