OMJHL Career
By this point he was getting known around Canada. He was drafted to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds at the age of 16. In his first and only season there he scored 182 points in 64 games. -
Signing with the Indianapolis Racers
To start off his career he signed with with the Indianapolis Racers in the WHA. -
Oilers Get Superstar
After only playing 8 games for Indianapolis he got traded to the Edmonton Oilers. -
WHA Closes
The WHA folded so the Edmonton Oilers decided to join the NHL. -
Gretzky's 1st NHL game
18 year old Gretzky gets a point in his NHL debut. -
Hart Memorial Trophy
Gretzky won the Hart Mmeorial Trophy (MVP) in his first season in the NHL. He was the first player to ever win the league MVP in his first NHL season. He won this award 9 times from 1980-87 and in 1989. -
Canadian Athlete of the Year
Gretzky was awarded the Lou Marsh award, which is given to the Canadian athlete of the year. -
200+ Points in a Season.
Gretzky ended his 1981-1982 season with an incredible 212 points with 92 goals, breaking multiple NHL records. He finished 4 seasons in total with 200+ points. -
Athlete of the Year Award
Wayne was the first ever Candian to win the Male Athlete of the Year award. He was also awarded Sports Illustrated Sportman of the Year. -

Gretzky got traded to the Los Angeles Kings. Gretzky, McSorley and Krushelnyski got traded to the Los Angeles Kings for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, $15 million in cash, and the Kings first-round draft picks in 1989 -
